There are plenty of choices to open up your lungs: stay on asphalt and explore 30+ miles of Sunriver bike paths. Or jump on the trails. One of our favorite runs is the 6-ish mile ROUNDABOUT loop. Going big? GREEN LAKES is a popular hiking destination, but is perfect for a long trail run as well. And we added a small stretch for a good view. But wait, there's more! The Cozy Bear Den is the starting and finishing point of the COZY BEAR 5K. This gentle hilly 5K is a perfect way to kick off the day.
Access to Bend's MTB trail system is within a mile from the house via the Roundabout and Afternoon Delight trails. HERE is a quick 6-ish mile figure eight (same as the trail run). BENDTRAILS's map has an overview and updated details on every local trail. Our favorite day on the mountain bike is a 27 MILE RIDE hitting some of the best local trails like Larsen's, Tiddly Winks, COD, Ticket to Ride and Catch 'n Release. And don't forget the Deschutes River Trail that stretches from the north of Sunriver into Bend. Got Groad? DIRTY FREEHUBS has some of the best gravel routes.
Floating the Deschutes is one of the main attractions in the summer months. Harper Bridge-Marina will take you about two hours, while Marina-Canoe Take Out is about 3.5 hours. Links to rentals HERE.
Do not forget snacks and bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
Obviously, the best resort skiing in Oregon can be found at Mt Bachelor Resort, but the area has also a lot of backcountry to offer. An easy, but bang for your buck, option is Tumalo Mountain. Easy access and beautiful views at the Tumalo summit. Routes vary by snow conditions. HERE is an example of a route. Plenty of resources as well on VISITBEND.
There are hundreds of hikes in the area. Short, long, summer, winter, easy, difficult, you name it. Hikes, tips, maps and other resources can be found on VISITBEND.
The cabin is situated near the 14th hole of the Woodlands course, consistently rated among Oregon's best courses and is one of four courses in SUNRIVER. TETHEROW and THE OLD BACK 9 are two other courses that are in the area that are worth the drive.
From the jagged tuff ring of Fort Rock State Park, to the Homestead Village ghost town along the Oregon Outback Scenic Byway, Central Oregon has no shortage of "I had no idea this place existed!" opportunities to discover and explore. Check out the TOURISM SITES to help plan your expeditions.
